01 Symptom to cause
Read the ice before you blame the compressor
Where the frost forms tells you which part failed. Ice on the coil is a defrost problem. Ice on the drawer front is a seal problem. Ice on the floor of the cabinet is a drain problem. Three different repairs.

Before you call Note the number on the freezer display and how long it has been there. A unit that drifted up over a week behaves differently from one that failed overnight, and the two point at different parts.
02 Drawers
Freezer drawers fail differently from columns
A full-height freezer column has one door, one gasket and a straightforward air path. A drawer unit has runners, a drawer face that has to pull square against the cabinet, and a seal that gets loaded every time the drawer is shoved shut with a bag of peas in the way.
That is why drawer units ice at the front and columns ice at the back. On drawers we check the runner height and the drawer alignment before touching anything electrical, because a drawer that is a few millimetres out will keep pulling in room air no matter how many parts get fitted.
Integrated units add one more variable: the cabinetry panel hung on the front changes the weight and can drag the drawer down over years of use. Correcting that is adjustment, not a part.

Freezer calls, in their words
Freezer at fifteen degrees, fridge fine. He knew straight away it was the freezer evaporator and not the compressor, which meant a much smaller job than I had braced for.
Under-counter freezer drawer icing over at the front. He found the drawer gasket had rolled and was pulling in room air. Replaced and adjusted the drawer runners so it seats flat.

What temperature should a Sub-Zero freezer hold?
Zero degrees Fahrenheit is the target, and a healthy unit holds within a couple of degrees of it. Anything sitting steadily in the teens is a fault, not a setting, and it is worth calling before the food goes.
Why is the drawer front icing up?
Room air is getting in and condensing. Usually the drawer gasket has rolled or taken a set on one side, or the drawer runners have dropped so the seal no longer meets the cabinet square. Both are fixable in one visit.
The freezer is warm but the fridge is fine. Is that the compressor?
On a dual-compressor 500 series it can be, because each compartment has its own system. On a single-system unit it is far more likely the freezer evaporator has iced over or the defrost heater has failed, which is a much smaller job.
Everything in the freezer has frost on it. Is that normal?
No. Frost forming on the food itself means moist air is entering repeatedly, from a seal that is not closing, a drawer that is not latching, or a defrost cycle that is not clearing the coil. It also drives up the run time.
Tell the dispatcher the model number and what it is doing
It is stamped on a plate inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on the upper left wall or behind the top grille. With the model in hand the van gets loaded with the parts that unit actually fails on, which is the difference between one visit and two.
