Called at six in the morning when the fresh food side had climbed to fifty. The tech found the evaporator fan seized behind the back panel, showed me the frost pattern before he touched anything, and had the part on the van. Back down to thirty-eight by the afternoon.

Sub-Zero refrigerator repair across the Bay Area
Built-in columns, side-by-sides and integrated units. Most warm-cabinet calls are airflow or defrost, and both get fixed on the first visit when you give us the model number on the phone.
Call dispatch, any hour (669) 338-4601 Someone picks up at any hour. Same-day slots open and close through the day, so the dispatcher will tell you what is actually free when you call.

What the unit is doing, and what it means
A Sub-Zero fails in a small number of ways. Reading the symptom correctly on the phone is most of the job, because it decides which parts ride out on the van.
| Symptom | Usual cause | What we do on site |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh food warm, freezer cold | Evaporator fan motor seized, or frost bridged across the evaporator after a defrost failure | Rear panel off, coil inspected, fan tested for continuity and free rotation. Fan motor or defrost heater and thermostat replaced. |
| Whole cabinet drifting warm | Condenser coil packed with dust behind the upper grille; head pressure up, run time up | Grille pulled, coil combed and vacuumed, condenser fan checked, compressor amp draw measured against the plate rating. |
| Display dark or unresponsive | Control board, harness connector, or the door switch feeding it | Harness and switch verified first. The board is only replaced once it is proved faulty, ordered against the serial number. |
| Runs constantly, never satisfies | Door seal has taken a set, or the unit has lost part of its refrigerant charge | Gasket seat checked with a dollar-bill pull test all round; if the seal is good, gauges go on and the sealed system is assessed. |
| Alarm sounding, temperatures fine | Thermistor drifted out of range, or a door that is not pulling square against the cabinet | Thermistor resistance read against the temperature chart. Hinges and cabinet alignment corrected where the door has dropped. |
| Water under the crisper | Drain trough frozen, so defrost melt backs up over the lip instead of draining | Trough cleared, drain line flushed, drain clip fitted so ice cannot bridge across it again. |
Worth knowing A built-in that has never had its condenser cleaned will run warm long before anything has actually broken. If that is what we find, the visit is the $89 and nothing more.
Old units are usually worth keeping
A large share of the Sub-Zeros in Bay Area kitchens are 500 and 600 series built-ins from the nineties and early two-thousands. They were designed to be serviced, and the parts that fail on them are still available.
500 series. Dual compressors, one per compartment. When one side goes warm and the other stays cold, that is a genuine split system and the diagnosis is confined to one half of the machine.
600 series. The workhorse. Failures cluster around the evaporator fan motor, the defrost heater, the thermistors and the door gaskets. All of it is on-van stock for us.
700 series and Designer columns. More electronics, so the diagnosis leans harder on reading the control board and its inputs before condemning anything. Sealed system work on these is the same as it has always been: gauges, leak detection, vacuum, weighed charge.
We fit genuine OEM Sub-Zero parts. Compressors, evaporator fans, control boards and gaskets come from the manufacturer, not a pattern-part bin.
Refrigerator calls, in their words
Twenty-year-old 632. Two other companies told me to replace it. These people put gauges on it, found the low-side pressure was fine and the problem was a shorted defrost heater. Fixed for a fraction of what a new one costs.
Booked online at eleven at night and someone still rang me back to confirm. The tech turned up with the model number already looked up and the likely parts on board.
Refrigerator questions
The freezer is fine but the fridge side is warm. What is that?
On a Sub-Zero with a single evaporator feeding both sides, that split almost always means air is not reaching the fresh food compartment: a failed evaporator fan motor, or frost across the coil because the defrost circuit has quit. Both are common and both are same-visit repairs.
How long does a refrigerator repair take?
Fan motors, thermistors, defrost heaters and gaskets are typically done in one visit. Control boards and compressors are ordered against your serial number, so those run to two visits and we book the second before leaving.
Which Sub-Zero series do you work on?
The 500, 600 and 700 series built-ins, the BI line, the Designer columns and the integrated units, plus the older 300 and 400 series still running in a lot of Peninsula kitchens.
Where do I find the model number?
Inside the fresh food compartment, on a plate on the upper left wall, or behind the lower grille on some built-ins. It starts with the series digits. Read it out on the phone and the van gets loaded for that unit.
Do you use Sub-Zero parts?
Yes. Compressors, evaporator fan motors, control boards, thermistors and gaskets are genuine OEM parts matched to the serial number, not pattern parts.
Tell the dispatcher the model number and what it is doing
It is stamped on a plate inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on the upper left wall or behind the top grille. With the model in hand the van gets loaded with the parts that unit actually fails on, which is the difference between one visit and two.
