A warm zone is not a dead compressor
Dual-zone units share one cooling source. If one zone is right and the other is not, the refrigeration is working and the problem is in how the air is being divided.

Cabinetry is the enemy of a wine unit
Wine columns and under-counter units are built into millwork with a specified clearance at the grille. That clearance is routinely lost — a toe-kick panel fitted flush, a cabinet run extended, a decorative grille that looks better and breathes worse.
The result is a condenser that cannot shed heat. The compressor runs longer, the zones drift up, and eventually the unit is condemned for a fault it does not have. Restoring the airflow path is often the whole repair.
The second recurring problem is the door. Wine doors are glass, heavy, and hung on hinges that carry that weight for years. When the door drops even slightly the seal stops meeting the cabinet evenly, warm room air trickles in, and you get condensation on the inside of the glass and a zone that never settles.

Wine unit calls, in their words
Wine column was sweating inside the door. He found the gasket had taken a set on the hinge side, replaced it and checked the door was pulling square against the cabinet afterwards.

Wine cooler questions
Only the upper zone is warm. Is the whole unit failing?
No. A dual-zone column feeds both zones from one cold source and meters air into the upper zone with a damper. When one zone alone drifts, the damper motor or its control is the first suspect, not the compressor.
What temperature should a wine unit hold?
It depends what you are storing, but the important thing is stability rather than a specific number. A zone that swings several degrees through the day is doing more harm to the wine than one sitting a little above where you set it.
There is condensation on the inside of the glass. Why?
Humid room air is reaching the cold glass. The usual cause is a door seal that has taken a set on the hinge side, sometimes a door that has dropped out of square. On glass doors it can also be a failed anti-condensation heater in the frame.
Can you work on under-counter wine units as well as full columns?
Yes. Under-counter units are more likely to have condenser airflow problems because they are boxed into cabinetry with a tight grille. That grille clearance is the first thing we check.
Tell the dispatcher the model number and what it is doing
It is stamped on a plate inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on the upper left wall or behind the top grille. With the model in hand the van gets loaded with the parts that unit actually fails on, which is the difference between one visit and two.
